Barranquilla, Colombia

We left Santa Marta in a 'colectivo' after Craig booked a two bedroom apartment on the web. We arrived in Barranquilla after a fairly hair-raising two hours along a 100km stretch of road full of trucks. Our driver was a lunatic but we saw a truck driver who was worse overtaking another on a blind corner when another vehicle came around the bend. The truck being overtaken had to almost leave the road in order to avoid a collision.

As we only stayed in Barranquilla for one night there was little time to do anything. This was made worse by the fact that there was some "confusion" over our booking and we ended up in a one bedroom apartment (ask Craig!).

I took this picture of our Santa Marta hotel as we were leaving, it looks a lot better from the outside than the inside!

Along the road between Santa Marta and Barranquilla there are a couple of toll stations. These guys hang around and take the opportunity to try to sell these 'snacks' to drivers,

We arrive, photo taken from our colectivo. Barranquilla is not as 'backward' as Santa Marta, but it's not a tourist place. It's an industrial city with a population of over 1 million. Santa Marta has a surprisingly large population of almost half a million - it didn't seem like it.

Even though Barranquilla is a 'modern' city they still use horses and carts!!

Craig in our apartment, he slept on a mattress where he's standing!

Hotel Windsor in the heart of Barranquilla. This was by far the most impressive building we saw.

We sat in this pub and watched a football game between a Bogotá team (Santa Fe) and Barranquilla. As you can see it has an English name. Don't get the wrong impression, almost nobody over here speaks any English. When we walked into our hotel in Santa Marta the first thing that I said to the guy on reception, in Spanish, was "Do you speak English?". When he replied with a "no" I thought he was joking, but I continued to speak in Spanish anyway. After a while we realised that no one that worked in the place spoke ANY English!

Barranquilla went wild after their team lost the game that night but qualified anyway
