Guayaquil, Ecuador

We flew back from the Galapagos Islands into Guayaquil, on our continuing journey Southward.

We only stayed for 2 days but we felt like we'd been there long enough. There has clearly been a security issue in the city and we spoke to a couple on our boat who had stayed there and didn't like it. The part of the city we stayed in was "Cerro Santa Ana". It's where the nightlife is and is actually a gated part of the city with 24 hour security.

We just arrived at our accommodation and I took this picture of Craig with the owner. We didn't book this through Airbnb but it definitely had that kind of feel to it. It was essentially a large house on 3 levels with a theatre on the ground floor. There were only 2 communal bathrooms, I suppose you'd describe it as a guest house...

A nice pub, pity about the barmaid that refused to smile. We noticed a definite increase in the price of things in Guayaquil

A pub on the Cerra Santa Ana steps, not great!! Note the gate on the left.

The owners

The guy insisted that 'Flash' was in this photo..??!

A locked gate between the security controlled part of the city and the rest. I don't know who had a key for this, the main routes between the 'sections' was past armed guards and barriers for vehicles.

My room was enormous! Pity it was in the attic and the air conditioning unit was far too small. By the way, we still haven't seen rain during our trip so far and the temperatures almost everywhere have been ideal.

View from my room - the river was massive.

There wasn't much in the way of architecture.

A strange pub at the top
