Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is a big city, population 3 million. We could have been in any European city, gone was the 'native' South American appearance of the place, and the people.

This was a disappointment, almost as if we had returned to our culture... Everything was more expensive too, a marked difference between here and Bolivia, even though La Paz was also a big city. No market stalls here, that in itself was a big change to everywhere we'd been before. Buenos Aires was the only place we saw in Argentina, maybe outside the 'big smoke' things would have been different...

We came here for New Year, only to find that almost everything shuts down!

Our flight from La Paz stopped in Santa Cruz, still in Bolivia but close to the Argentinian border.

Our Airbnb apartment in Buenos Aires. Very nice and our host was the best. The first time we had a washing machine, hallelujah!! Can't wait to write a fantastic review for Marisa (¡hola Marisa!)

View of Buenos Aires from our apartment.

I take a train to a place called Tigre, it's one of the "things to do" here. The lack of pictures might explain my opinion of the place, although this was New Years eve, and at 3pm everything started to shut down and I worried that I wasn't going to get a train back to the city, 50 minutes away.

I arrive in Tigre. I just happen to catch this drunk guy in the photo, a train guard had to pull him off the floor of the train. Not typical of Buenos Aires at all.

Centre of Buenos Aires.

European looking people! What happened to the South America we knew and loved..?! Complete transformation, almost everything prior to this was 'back of beyond'. I'm sure most of these people speak Spanish and very little English, if any, but I felt like the 'admiration' for the 'Spanish speaking gringos' was gone. We were no longer 'alien'...

Pub in Buenos Aires, it could be anywhere in Europe. Again, a transformation - I would rather be back in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador or Peru. Let's see how Uruguay is tomorrow, the same as here I reckon - it's only 2 hours by boat!
